What MetaTrader 5 is
MetaTrader 5 is a multi-asset trading platform from MetaQuotes, the developer of MetaTrader 4. Brokers and trading firms license it to offer forex, CFDs and, where the provider supports them, stocks and exchange-traded futures. It runs as a Windows desktop application, in a web browser and on iOS and Android.
Compared with its predecessor, it adds more chart timeframes, more pending order types, a depth of market window, a built-in economic calendar and a faster, multi-threaded strategy tester. Automated strategies, called Expert Advisors, and custom indicators are written in MQL5, and tools written for MetaTrader 4 do not run on it without being converted.
Accounts can be set to hedging mode, which allows several positions on one symbol in opposite directions, or netting mode, which keeps one combined position per symbol. Before buying a challenge, check which mode the firm uses, whether Expert Advisors and copy trading are allowed, and which symbols, trading hours and server time apply to your account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run Expert Advisors on a prop firm MetaTrader 5 account?
Many firms allow them, but the rules differ. Some restrict strategies such as high-frequency trading, latency arbitrage or copying trades between accounts at different firms. Check the firm's automated trading policy and ask support if your strategy is unusual.
Do MetaTrader 4 indicators work on MetaTrader 5?
Not directly. MetaTrader 5 uses the MQL5 language, so indicators and Expert Advisors built for MetaTrader 4 need a separate MetaTrader 5 version or a rewrite. Check that the tools you depend on are available before you switch.
Can I trade a prop firm MetaTrader 5 account on my phone?
Usually yes. The MetaTrader 5 mobile app lets you log in with the server and account details the firm gives you. Expert Advisors do not run on mobile, so automated strategies need the desktop platform or a virtual private server.
